Mel Brigg’s next instruction to me was “Paint a shiny green Granny Smith apple, lit from above, as realistically as possible.” I did just that.
It was the first still life I’d ever set up in my studio. And it opened my eyes to the beauty and detail and intricacy in a simple green apple… how it is touched here and there with gold, how subtly the colour blends, how the smooth polished surface reflects even its own shadow. Too beautiful…
The simplicity and freshness and sense of home that the apple held really touched me, and I hope I’ve captured a bit of my wonderment in this little miniature of an ordinary apple.
The extraordinary is to be found even in the ordinary.
