Copper-coloured Pear Trinity at QAG

Copper-coloured pear trinity

George Baldessin’s Pears (1975) at QAG

Shallow expanse of cool depths
stretches over pebbles, so
soft and still…
hushed.

Liquid clear
Sheer miracle
Fresh
Soft
Refreshing
Life-giving
Yet can wear through solid rock.

Pebbles smooth,
tones of earth,
snuggle under their cool
clear covering.

And there, floating,
Are three pears!
Huge
Copper-coloured
Glistening
Yet touched by time in
darks and
marks and
gouges.
Three Pears.
A trinity of fruit.
“Look to the fruit – thorn trees don’t bear strawberries and thistles don’t bear grapes. Character is encoded in the fruit.”
Genetically encoded.
Reproduces according to type.

The form intrigues and pleasures
Three Plump Pears.
Timeless fruit.
Sculpture.
That speaks.
Floats on and rises from fresh water, clean and clear and
life-giving.
