The Sapling – playing with rainbow bubbles

Acrylic on canvas
90cm x 60cm

Long ago, in contemplation of the concept of a sapling, I journalled:
“Right now, I may be just a little sapling. But, one day, I’ll be a mighty big tree.”

In this painting, a beyond-natural realm presses into the natural – in thick globules of white light, that permeate the fine veil between heaven and earth. And in rainbows like those that danced in the still air of my studio on the hill, a long time ago.

I painted them like bubbles, remembering how blowing bubbles on the deck used to thrill my children and me, and how my material investigations during my Fine Art degree included painting with light and rainbows.

In the Bible, the rainbow in the sky after rain was given as a sign and signifier of hope. So here, hope dances around the sapling, playing, and bringing joy.

It’s a reminder to me to play more… to blow bubbles and smell the roses and to feel joy rise up and cascade into laughter… to see the rainbows, and to even create rainbows in my home via sparkling crystal and light … and to enjoy the beauty of life itself.
