Depths of Purpose and layers of meaning

The lilypond painted by Lawrence Daws, and presented at his Held Close exhibition at Caboolture Regional Gallery was simply titled “Green Pond.” It mesmerised me. And initiated two visits of sustained observation and admiration on the gallery seating in front of the triptych, in July 2018.

The way Daws created depth and space, layering of colour, and had turned from his rather apocalyptic vision towards peace in nature, combined with the multitude of tones that were labelled “green” was simply astounding. It evoked peace and joy and beauty that took my breath away.

So the visual kernel came from Daws, and the kernel of truth came from the Passion version of God’s word, in Psalm 92:5, “Depths of purpose and layers and meaning saturate everything You do.”

I challenged myself to do a white on white painting for my dining room, which would house my new crystal chandelier one day. A sparkling confection of whiter shades of pale, that still evoked depth and proper perspective, was created layer by layer. Sometimes more white was added, sometimes more blue of heavenly reflections on water, at times more green, more violet, more sparkle, less sparkle, more misting, more crisping up of edges, more erasing, more revealing… and layer by layer, depths of purpose and layers of meaning were considered and contemplated and processed and absorbed into my inner being. I wrestled and wept with joy simultaneously.

The layers of life are so rich… so beautiful… such a gift. And no matter what the circumstances, Truth remains constant. Kindness and goodwill, grace and mercy and peace always rise. And depths of purpose and layers of meaning saturate everything God does.
